We at Alaafia Kids love books! Books are a great way to introduce young people to the world and everything in it. One of the regular activities in our home is exploring a book together to see where it can take us. We sing it, dance it, cry it, act it out. We have real fun with it! We ask all kinds of questions while reading books such as “Why did she…?” or “What will happen if…?” These discussion starters often lead to lengthy family discussions. We never seem to exhaust the learning potential of a book! We follow-up by doing book “reports,” which may be a costumed one-act play, a kitchen creation, or a diorama. We always do culminating arts and crafts activities with books, too. Books are great in so many ways!

Favorite Books Make Learning to Read Fun
Of course, books are the perfect way to help little people learn to read. When children discover a book that interests them, they will ask a grown-up to read it over and over with them. This is a sure sign that the children are motivated to learn to read it themselves. So, if you listen closely, maybe when they think you are not around, you may hear your children “reading” their special book. They may really be reciting the book, but one day, that recitation will be transformed into genuine reading. Of course, other elements in teaching reading are needed, such as developing sound-letter correspondence, but these skills can also be practiced in the context of a book that your children adore and want to read and may supplement more traditional or more rigorous reading lessons you choose to do with your children. Alaafia Kids Books
While searching for books that featured biracial children, we wanted to find books that our own Alaafia Kids would feel right at home in. We wanted them to witness visual celebrations of their diversity and heritage. And, we wanted them to get a lesson in tolerance. Unfortunately, we noticed the real scarcity of appropriate titles.
